Stop Marketing to Everyone!

I think it’s time to tell people the importance of treating your social networking profiles exactly how they were meant to be: fun! All too often people are trying to build huge social networking presences with the sole purpose of marketing or pushing some product. That’s annoying and disrespectful. Nobody wants to hear about your offer every five minutes when they login to Myspace or Facebook. The sole purpose of these types of networks is to build contacts and FRIENDS. You need to treat each interaction like you would if you met someone off the street. I would hope the first thing you would do wouldn’t be to give them your business card or try and sell them a service. Once you have a working friendship casual mention of what you do and what you have to offer are fine, but the vast majority of what you say should revolve a friendly relationship between you and your contacts.

I guess this is more or less me venting about the amount of companies that build useless profiles that nobody even pays attention to. We’ve all seen it before and I don’t understand why people think they are going to be any different.
