There are also some “external” strategies, such as requesting links from other web sites (the link text, number of links, and quality of inbound links are all considered to some extent by Google in determining a site’s ranking for a keyword). Most of these strategies seek to improve a site’s “Google PageRank.”

Note that many search engine optimization techniques are considered “unethical” or “inappropriate” by Google and other search engines. For example, paying other sites for links, or “stuffing” keywords excessively on a page, can result in complete exclusion (”blacklisting”) of your web site. These are often called “black hat” techniques, although the people who do them try to persuade clients that they are “gray hat” strategies.

As the first response here notes, there are many firms that will seek your money to help you improve your site’s search engine rankings. Many of them are honest, respectable people and agencies; unfortunately, a huge number are unethical, incompetent, and/or dishonest.
