How to Register Your Domain & Set Up A Site

What you need to get a real website up and rolling

These days, getting a website up and rolling isn’t as technical as it used to be. Without any programming knowledge at all you can have yourself a totally personalized site with a personalized URL at a pretty good price. While there are lots of other factors that are going to be important in your online marketing campaigns, the one you need to not overlook is going to be your domain name. It’s going to establish your identity, make you recognizable, and memorable. And it’s not that difficult of a thing to do,.

Do you know what I mean by “domain?” A domain is the name of your site and is basically the address you’d be giving somebody if you told them to visit your site. It is what precedes the “dot com” in your address. In order to get people to come to your site, you want something simple and succinct that they’ll remember. It can’t be something with a bunch of different slashes that is obviously being hosted by some free provider. This is fine for blogs and things, but when it comes to a business, you need to present some professionalism.

Once you get a domain name then you basically own the address. It’s like you bought property but you haven’t built anything on it yet because you don’t have any materials or equipment. It’s not the same idea, but for a comparison it makes sense. Now you need a host. The name is pretty self-explanatory. It’s where your info will be housed and held. You’ll be uploading files to your host, or your web guy will do that for you. So, when people come check out your site, they’re viewing files stored by your host.

So what do you do? You get a domain name and register it. You can do this at quite a few different places like GoDaddy.com and Hostgator. Make sure you search for coupons which are pretty easy to find. You’ll get a code, usually for some percent off of your total. If the code doesn’t work, it’s not a big deal, just go find another until you get one that works. There might even be enough available to you that you can pick and choose what deal works best. After that’s done, then you’ll need to get a host and HostGator is a great place to do that. They have been in the business for awhile, offer good deals, and you can also find coupon codes for them. You can free find templates at templates.hostgator.com to make creating your site a lot easier, too.

Then you need to update nameserver where you registered the domain. This is sent to you by email from your host. Head to your dotcom at /cpanel, enter your username and password for your host. Now you’ll have access to your file manager and this is where you, or your web guy, will be uploading files. It’s not just as simple as uploading files and letting the magic happen, but most likely you realize that. The files you upload will go to the public_html folder. You’ll name it your index, and that will allow the files to be seen by the people who visit your website, or domain. You’ll be up and running in no time.

Setting all of this is quick and easy with Hostgator (they will guide you through it step by step.) Check them out HERE
